Editing Effects

Now we are ready to film we need to start thinking about the effects we are going to include in our video. After talking about different things, we came up with several ideas:

Transitions
We have decided we are going to use several different transitions throughout our music video. One of the transitions we will use will be cuts. These will probably be our main transition. We think this will be effective as it will make scenes appear more dramatic. Another transition we will use will be cross dissolves. These will be on the slower parts of the video, for example when we have a change of scene or a change of time. The last transition we will use will be fades. These will be used for the memories, there will be a fade into the memory and a fade out again.

Editing Effects
One effects we are going to use is to make part of the video in black and white. This will be for the flashbacks. We think this will look very effective as it will emphasize that it is a memory/flashback. It will highlight that it is in the past, and then the color will go back to normal when the video goes back to reality. We do not know how we will do this at the moment and so we need to do some research into this.

Split Screen
We have decided to make two of the shots into split screens. We think this will look effective as it will show both sides of the story, it will show the girlfriend and the boyfriend at the same time. This will allow us to see the actions of both characters at the same time. Agin we need to do some research on how to go about doing this.

Magazine Adverts

For our second ancillary task, Ellie and I have decided to create a magazine advertisement for the release of our music video. Our magazine advertisement will relate to our music video, and may show images from the video. This will ensure that the advert follows some sort of house style, so that the advert is instantly recognizable.

Looking at these advertisements below, the artist is generally pictured on the front. The name of the album and the release date are written below. The artists name and the song track are written in bigger writing at the top.

All of these advertisements above have a similar layout, there is a main image, a style to the video and it is quite clear what genre the music is. This seems to be the most conventional style of magazine adverts, with a main image and information about the albums at the bottom. I think it is important that the artist is the main feature of the advert because it makes it much more recognizable to people.

The layout of this magazine advert is slightly different. There is no main picture. However the artists name is in big colorful writing at the top of the poster. It is very eye catching. The fact that there is not a picture of Britney on here shows how iconic Britney is. Being a worldwide superstar, people do not need to see a picture of her to know who she is. This will not be the case with our video, as it is a first album, and so we will need a picture of our artist. This advert still follows some of the conventional themes however, it still has all the information about the album at the bottom of the poster. This advert also follows a house style, it is the same as the actual 'circus' album and also the video for the single 'circus.' This makes it iconic for Britney fans, as as soon as you see it you know what album it is from.

Out of all the magazine adverts I have looked at, I think ours will most look like the Plan B one. This is because we have already decided we want the CD cover to be dark, with white writing and lighting around the artist. To follow a house style we will have a dark magazine advert as well, with the lighting effects. I think the way the Plan B advert is quite simple and not over done is quite eye catching.

Shooting Schedule

Now we have finished the animatic and most of our planning, Ellie and I are ready to start filming our music video. We originally planned to go to London and start our filming on the 1st of December. However we then got snowed in for a week. The transport was not running properly and so this made getting up to London impossible. Even if we could get up there the filming would look rubbish as there would be slushy snow and ice everywhere. We couldn't even film the indoor scenes as we couldn't get into school to get a video camera. Now the snow has finally cleared we have arranged more dates.

Friday 17th December we will shoot all of our indoor scenes. All our actors are available and we don't need to worry about the weather conditions so this will definitely go ahead.

Saturday 18th December we will travel up to London and film at the Millennium Bridge and embankment. We will then go to Greenwich Park to film scenes there. This is as long as transport is all running fine.

If we are able to film on these days then we should get most of our filming done, which means we can then start editing the film and start working towards producing a rough cut.

Animatic

Here is our finished animatic. These are our initial ideas, and so when we come to filming certain aspects of the video may change slightly. However this gives us a really good starting point to start filming our video, as we now know exactly what we need to do.

Digipak Research

For our first ancillary task, we have decided that we will make a digipak cover to go alongside our music video.

The cover will directly relate to the music video and will show the theme of our music video. We both have the same ideas of how we want our music video to look. This made it easy to decide how we would go about making a digipak cover. We both thought it would be good to have the cover quite dark, as it would convey and reflect the mood of the video and the atmosphere between the characters.

We both particularly like the idea of having a black album cover with white writing, as we think this looks very effective and the writing is very clear. If we then add lighting to the image we think it could look very eye catching, and this theme would go well with the theme of the music video. We also both like the idea of having transparent effects on the cover. The only cover we could find that uses this effect was a Jimi Hendrix cover. We could use this effect to show his girlfriend looking over them.

Here are some album covers that we both particularly like:

Animatic Planning

Over the past couple of weeks Ellie and I have been working on or animatic. We have to draw out what our video will look like. This has taken us a while as neither of us have any drawing skills! This will help us when it comes to filming the final video, as we will have an idea of what we want it to look like. We have also had to edit the animatic in Final Cut, and so we have had practice with Final Cut prior to filming our video.

Change of Location

We originally choose to film part of our video in Hyde Park. However after futher research and planning we have changed our minds. We have decided that instead of Hyde Park we will use Danson Park. We think this is a better location, plus it is easier for us to get to which makes filming there more practical.

Music Video Permission Letter

We needed to the copyright holder of our chosen song so they could give us their permission to use the song for our video, and also for our digipak and magazine advertisement for the ancillary tasks. We sent a letter to the company that Snow Patrol were signed by, Polydor and also the sub company of Polydor called Fiction.

Mood Board

Now that we have all of our initial ideas, we decided to create a mood board, putting all our ideas into pictures. This helps to visualize our ideas properly.

Characters

We only have three characters in our video, so finding the actors wasn't too difficult. The actors we will use are Annabel, Rich and Rishan.

Possible Locations

Embankment - Bridge.

A busy location, at night quite a romantic spot. Will be good to unveil his affair. Also good to show his confusion as he could look lost in such a busy place. The video will start and finish here, with his affair being uncovered on the bridge at the very start, and then him seeing her with another man having moved on at the very end.

Hyde Park

Again quite a romantic place to go for a walk. We could use his location as one of the flashbacks, with him remembering times of when they were together in hyde park. As he walks along she is by his side and it looks like they are back together, however as they walk she slowly fades away from his side and we realise he is dreaming about being back at this place with her.

Lyrics Analysis

This could be the very minute
I'm aware I'm alive
All these places feel like home

° Show him looking very confused, lost and unhappy.
° Could use effects to show two rooms next to each other, with her in one room on her own and him cheating on her in the next room. The affair is shown right at the start.

With a name I'd never chosen
I can make my first steps
As a child of 25

° Could show a clip of him walking, going from a baby to a 25 year old, showing how life has passed him by so quickly.
° Shows flashbacks of him growing up with her, but now all that is lost, as if all his memories mean nothing anymore.

This is the straw, final straw in the
Roof of my mouth as I lie to you
Just because I'm sorry doesn't mean
I didn't enjoy it at the time

° She finds out about his affair, video her in slow motion to emphasise the shock and heartbreak she feels. She sees him with the other women, at Embankment on the bridge. Quite a romantic location becomes ironic for the way she feels when she sees him.
° He hates what he done to her but he couldn't help it.
° Although he is sorry he enjoyed having the affair a the time, it was his guilty pleasure, however now he regrets it. Shows him trying to get his girlfriend back.

You're the only thing that I love
It scares me more every day
On my knees I think clearer

° She is the love of his life. Could show them walking along together as if the are back together. However she slowly fades away from his side and we realise he is dreaming.
° He is begging her to come back to him, but he has lost her for good.

Goodness knows I saw it coming
Or at least I'll claim I did
But in truth I'm lost for words

° More memories of when they were together, again show him looking lost and confused.
° He could be standing on the bridge with everyone rushing past him and he stands out in the middle of everyone, to emphasise his loneliness. Flashbacks to earlier on in the video when she found out about the affair.
° Again he tries to go and win her back.

What have I done it's too late for that
What have I become truth is nothing yet
A simple mistake starts the hardest time
I promise I'll do anything you ask...this time

° While he is on the bridge, he sees her with another man. She has moved on and he has lost her for good. Show his heartbreak.

Pitch

In our lesson we have been given the task of pitching all our ideas and research to our teacher. We have to present everything that we have done so far. To do this we need to start thinking about the locations, mise-en-scene, camera angles, camera shots, characters and the storyline.

Before we can think about all the different aspects to our video we have to finalise our storyline. To do this ellie and I have sat down and analysed the lyrics, so we can fit our ideas to the lyrics. Once we have done this we will start to fit the other aspects into the video.

Initial Ideas

Now that we have decided on our song choice, we have to started to take some initial ideas. Ellie and I sat down together to think of ideas for things we can include in our music video.

VH1

VH1 is an American cable television network based in New York City. Launched on January 1 1985, the original purpose of the channel was to build on the success of MTV by playing music videos, but targeting a slightly older demographic than its sister channel, focusing on the lighter, softer side of popular music. The channel was originally created by Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment. Both VH1 and its sister channel MTV are currently part of the MTV Networks division of corporate parent Viacom. Today, although VH1 still plays many music videos, its most recent claim to fame has been in the area of music-related reality programming, with the channels overall focus being on popular culture.

MTV

MTV is an American network based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981. At one time, MTV had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture. MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. (MTV Dance, MTV Hits, MTV Base, MTVX, VH1 Classic etc), and affiliated channels internationally. MTV's moral influence on young people, including issues related to censorship and social activism, has been a subject of debate for years. The original purpose of MTV was to be "Music Television," playing music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The original taglines of the channel were "You'll never look at music the same way again," and "On cable. In stereo." Although the concept of playing music videos 24/7 has long been abandoned, MTV US still promotes and plays a limited selection of music videos on its TV channel and website. Internationally, the station continues to support a broad selection of music including 4 channels in the UK that broadcast 23 hours of music video per day.

From 1997, the airing of rock videos was reduced on MTV, with skeptics saying 'Rock is Dead.' From then to 2004, MTV made efforts periodically to introduce more pop/rock videos to the channel. They have been playing pop/rock music on the channel ever since, however today most of the airtime is devoted to pop and R&B videos on MTV.

Codes and Conventions of Music Videos

Codes - Equipment used cameras, also symbolic codes for example what the person is feeling and how we see that.

Conventions - The way things are done things are done within the music video, this also describes the genre of the music video.

The conventions of music video's can vary depending on the specific genre of a music video. However there are some general conventions of music videos:

◦ The artist/band are shown in the video, and usually predominate the video.
◦ The lyrics of the song influence what is shown in the video, what we see emphasizes the lyrics.
◦ The pace of the editing fits the pace of the music.
◦ The mise en scene reflects the mood of the music.
◦ There is often a mixture of the artist performing, as well as a narrative story line.
Close ups of the artist/band.

These can be placed into certain categories:

Narrative – A music video has a story/theme to it.
Performance – Where we see the artist/band performing live.
Mixture – With a mix of both narrative and performance qualities.
Cameo – Where the band or the artist is featured in the narrative but doesn’t perform.
Animation – Where the video contains digital features such as flash and stop frame.

Now we are clear on the general conventions of music videos, we can use these and ensure that we apply them to our own music video.

Target Audience

Now we have chosen our song, we need to identify who our target audience is going to be. It is important to understand our target audience, as we need to make sure we are appealing to the right people. Our target audience would be males and females. We can gather that it would appeal to teenagers of ages around 13-20, however it would also appeal to 20+ people. This is a very wide range of people, and this is because pop-rock music can vary quite a lot; from slow music, to upbeat and fast music. Pop-rock music is not as specific as genres such as rock, indie, hip-hop or dance, which means it has a much wider target audience. Although our genre of music can appeal to a wide range of people, we think that the main ages of people will be ages 15-25. This is because the song we have chosen has quite a serious meaning to it, and the younger generation often take themselves quite seriously. Also as this song is about the breakdown as a relationship, many young people will be able to empathise with it. Because of this we think the younger generation will be able to understand and interact with this song better. The teenage generation like to be extremely up to date with music, and so although we need to adhere to the typical conventions of pop-rock music videos, we need to make sure the video is new, fresh, up to date and trendy. As most of the younger generation watch television, use the internet and read magazines, that would be a clear way to reach out to our specific target audience. However we still must not forget that the music itself will appeal to a larger scale of people.

Snow Patrol - Chocolate

Possible Song choices

Now we have chosen our music genre of rock-pop, we have researched songs. We did this by looking at music videos on youtube. We wanted to find a song that was not in the charts, and that is too well known. We spent ages looking through trying to find songs that matched our genre and where appropriate for us to make a music video to. Here is a list of the songs we have found:

After researching all these videos, and listening to each song several times we have decided that the song we will produce a music video to is 'chocolate' by Snow Patrol. It is a typical rock-pop song and after analysing the lyrics we have decided that the song is about man who has lost the girl that he really loves, either through cheating on her or lying to her about something, and as a result of this he has lost her. We have decided that the song is called 'chocolate' because his affair was a guilty pleasure like chocolate, and because of his guilty pleasure he has lost the love of his life and cannot get her back.

Genre

Before choosing the song we would use for our music video, we have decided to produce a video of the pop/rock genre. This will allow us to create a video that is a perhaps a bit more interesting. For this genre, it will be appropriate to produce a narrative video. By doing a pure pop video we would have to use dancers to suit the genre, and this would have been too restricting, so by doing a pop/rock video we have more freedom in the things we can include in our video.

Pop Rock
Pop rock is a mix of pop and rock music using a catchy pop style with light lyrics. There are varying definitions of the term, ranging from a slower and mellower form of rock music to a sub-genre of pop music. Pop rock has been described as an "upbeat variety of rock music represented by artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Pink, Mcfly and the Kings of Leon. There is not a specific target audience for pop-rock music. However, modern day pop-rock artists such as Pink and Kings of Leon could appeal to people from the young generation through to the middle age generation, although it may not appeal as much to the older generation as much. It would also appeal to people who may not like listening to hardcore rock music, or even slow paced pop music. Pop-rock is somewhere in the middle, it is a more upbeat genre of music without being too rock styled. For this reason the music can appeal to quite a wide range of people. This is crucial to know for when we make our music video, as we need to have an idea of who we need our music video to appeal to.

Pixie Lott - Turn It Up

To start my A2 media coursework, I have analysed the music video to 'Turn It Up' by Pixie Lott. I thought this would be a helpful video to analyse as Pixie Lott is a popular artist in the charts at the moment, and this is a typical pop video, so I can easily see what some of the typical conventions of a pop video are.

◦ As this video starts, we immediately see a very bright setting. We can see natural sunlight, and this gives us the sense of a feel good, upbeat song. The first thing we see in the picture is someone walking along the street. Although we have not seen her face, we can gather that this person is Pixie Lott. The music starts straight away, and the lyrics echo the visual image on the camera. We hear 'turn it up, turn it up, turn it up, turn it up' and the camera tilts up her body. The music also gets louder each time she says 'turn it up,' which emphasises the lyrics even more.

◦ As soon as she starts singing we see a close up of her face. The camera changes from a couple of close ups on her face, to a close up of her bag swinging while she is walking, to a long shot of her walking along a street. These different camera changes are quite quick, which fits in with the pace of the music.

◦ The lyrics also echo the visuals as well here as the lyrics say 'lets go forward' and we have an over the shoulder shot of her walking up the street, which emphasises her going forward.

◦ There are a series of close ups of her face, and in most of them she is in the centre of the frame. As I watched the video I noticed that close ups predominate throughout.

◦ Once the pace of the music speeds up the camera quickly cuts to Pixie and other people dancing on a roof terrace. There are a series of cuts from dancing, to her walking along the street. When we see her dancing she is in the middle of all the dancers. She has the camera preference and she is objectified by the camera.

◦ There is also a close up of all the dancers in a line stepping forward. This emphasises the lyrics further as at this point the lyrics are about going to 'different places.' The dancers also spin around as we hear 'as the world turns around' which again is an example of lyrics echoing visuals.

◦ The dancing is taking place on a roof terrace, and we can see the tops of very tall buildings in the background. The lyrics are about the world turning round and going different places. The setting makes it seem like she is almost on top of the world, and emphasises the lyrics, as it gives the impression she is standing tall and is in control.

◦ During the chorus, there continues to be a series of quick cuts between her in the street and the dancers on the roof. As the pace of the music speeds up however the cuts get quicker. Although we can see other dancers on the roof terrace, Pixie Lott constantly has camera preference and is always objectified in the frame.

◦ Once the chorus is over, the pace of the music slows down again, and the pace of the cuts also slow down. There is a close up of her dialling numbers on a public phone. After a cut to her dancing, there is then a shot of a man on the phone, we can gather that this is who Pixie Lott is phoning. This is made even clearer with a cut to the close up of Pixies mouth straight after seeing him. Another way it is clear they are on the phone to each other is by the camera framing. He is on the far left of the camera, and then a quick cut to her shows her in the far right of the frame, giving the sense they are talking to each other. There is quite a great contrast between Pixie and this man. Throughout the video so far she has been in bright, natural sunlight emphasising a positive atmosphere towards her. This man is pictured in quite a dark lighted room, and there is quite a negative atmosphere towards him.

◦ We can understand what is going on here through the lyrics, as we hear 'it's so hard just to say good bye it ain't easy the more and the more you try,' and we can see how this man is struggling to move on. Another contrast between Pixie and this man is that throughout the whole video so far, Pixie is filmed dancing with many other people. However this man is on his own, conveying a sense of loneliness. Again this adds to the sense of a positive energy towards her, and a negative energy towards him.

◦ The second chorus is very much the same as the first one, with quick cuts between close ups of her and long shots of everyone dancing on the terrace. Again there is very bright lighting and generally a positive energy to the video.

◦ As the second chorus finishes, the lighting and the setting change. We see Pixie Lott for the first time sitting in a car. We can see her through the window and there is raindrops covering the window. It is quite a dark lighting, and we see her much more like we saw the man in the video earlier on. The lyrics are 'I might loose my mind for a while but ill be fine.' This is emphasised by the video, as we see her through the rainy window. There is the implication that the raindrops covering her face could represent tears. The music is much slower as well, and the camera is fairly still, and there is only one slow cut between 2.09 and 2.19, so the camera is very focused on her, which again emphasises the sudden difference in the pace of the music.

◦ Once the music starts to speed up again, we see her in the light again. However the camera still cuts between her dancing and her sitting in the car, so there is still a slightly negative atmosphere.

◦ Once she starts dancing we have another change of scenery, it looks like a street. They are dancing in front of a wall full of graffiti. The music has picked up and is much more upbeat, but there is still quite a dark lighting. There is also now only Pixie and two other dancers. By loosing all the other dancers we also loose the energy, and it looks much slower than before. This also reminds us off the man earlier in the video, as he was also on his own. Although Pixie is not alone, by loosing all the other dancers we loose the united feeling that we felt towards her earlier.

◦ At the end of the video, we see Pixie Lott and this man meet for the first time. The camera is still focused on her, with an almost over his shoulder shot so we can just see her face. It is a close up shot. This is followed by a close up of there hands as they leave each other. This emphasises them moving on, and forward, as the lyrics say.

This video conveys some of the typical conventions of a pop music video. Like with many other music videos, the video tells us what is happening in the lyrics. There are many examples in this video of the visual image echoing the lyrics, which is useful in helping us to understand the song a bit more. Pixie Lott also has camera preference most of the way through, and she is almost always objectified in the frame. Im sure that when I look at other videos this will be the same for other artists.
